Getting to Know Your Neighbors in a Modern Way

When we first got into our new house, it was the start of the holidays (probably not the best time to meet neighbors). Everyone is busy doing family things. When you’re in a rual neighborhood like ours, it’s not as easy as it was in California to pay neighbors a visit. Here, I think I might find it odd if someone came walking or driving up our drive unannounced.

I was interested to learn that you can actually see your neighborhood in It lists the main people in each household. If it’s not correct, you can make corrections as well.

In a small town like ours, it’s interesting to see the correllation of businesses, streets and marriages. For instance, one of the girl’s maiden names is one of my other neighbor’s last names. There are also two neighbors of the same last name. One of the neighbor’s last name is the name of a dealership here in town. One of my other neighbors has a street named after his last name.

How do you meet people? I think you have to be creative. Besides, we hadn’t met any of our neighbors in the 3 months we had been there. So, I formulated a letter that let them know who we are and ended it with, …”I wanted to make sure we got a note out to you and let you know who we are. We didn’t want to come by unannounced, but we’d love to meet you and get to know you. It would be nice to make new friends. Please don’t hesitate to call or stop by any time.”

We received three phone calls and three visits. One neighbor came accompanied by her daughter and brang us a plant, another neighbor came with her son and brought us 2 local pancake breakfast tickets (that we went to last weekend) and another neighbor came over to meet us unfortunately while we were on our vacation. My neighbors expressed that they were very sorry that they hadn’t welcome us, but admitted they had busy family lives.

I’ve learned that we have a neighborhood of mostly families with young children. The layout of our street is mostly neighbors with 5 acres. You could actually call it a sub-division. However, there are a few of us who have more acerage.

We have had the chance of meeting two other neighbors due to their animals wandering onto our property. The came in handy for that as well. It listed a phone number so we could call them.

I wonder if my neighbors ever wondered, “How did she know our names?” Anyway, no one ever asked. Maybe people are just glad when you do know their name.

Thanks for the info. I’ll keep that info handy. We’ve had a couple homes sold recently and I have trouble remembering names.
