Seeds and Seedlings

05Mar13

It’s kind of disappointing that we haven’t been able to get the plastic on our greenhouse because of the weather. Lucky we used the garage as Plan B. In a wooden seed starting box that Eric built, we used a heating pad underneath and fluorescent lights. All the seeds were started in recycled toiletpaper/paper towel rolls and egg cartons. We planted cabbage and onions about 2 weeks ago and they are just starting to come up. It’s kind of exciting to see the first vegetables of the season.

Today it’s raining, but the forecast looks good for the rest of the week. Maybe we’ll be able to get our planting beds ready this week.

For vegetables, I’ve got about 3 groups of plantings based on their planting dates. Vegetables are based on the last frost date and herbs and flowers are based on temperature. It’s a lot to think about and I might have been overly ambitious, but hopefully it will all go fairly well.

Meanwhile, as it rains here, it’s giving us time to think about what’s next when it clears and dries up a bit.
