Cicada Screamers

18Jul13

Apparently, there are over 3,000 species of cicadas. I started hearing them over 2 weeks ago. Cicadas are only in the eastern United States.

Cicadas eat trees. They are especially distructive to young trees. They make buzzing and chirping sounds to call their mates. It’s an overwhelming chorus at night here. There must be thousands of them!

I thought it was funny that there’s a band in Florence, Alabama called the Cicada Screamers. What a cool name!

That is not a cicada. It is a Katydid. Cicadas are oval about an inch long with big bulging red or green eyes. They have short legs.

    • I stand corrected! Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll let Eric know. He’s the one who told me it was a cicada.
